How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram
Instagram does not notify you when someone unfollows you, and it keeps no list of unfollowers you can look at. What it does give you is a complete copy of your followers whenever you ask. Compare two of those copies, and every unfollower has a name.
The short answer
- Request your Instagram data export today, with “Followers and following” ticked and JSON as the format. The export guide shows every tap.

What the comparison shows

Why not use an unfollower app?
Instagram has no official way for another app to read your follower list, so unfollower apps ask for your username and password and sign in as you. A login handed to an app you do not know is the easiest way to lose an account, and reading follower lists at speed can trigger Instagram’s security checks, from a verification challenge to a temporary block.
The export avoids all of that. You ask Instagram for your own data through its own tool, and IG Diff reads the file in your browser without ever touching your account.
Tips for accurate results
- Export on a regular schedule, such as the first of each month, so you know roughly when someone left.
- Always set the date range to “All time”. A shorter range leaves out older followers, and they would look like unfollowers.
- Keep every export imported. IG Diff can compare any two, not only the latest pair.
- A renamed account looks like an unfollow and a new follower at once, so check both lists before drawing conclusions.
Common questions
Does Instagram notify you when someone unfollows you?
No. Instagram sends no notification for an unfollow, and your follower count is the only visible sign. Comparing two exports is the reliable way to put names to the change.
How often should I export to track unfollowers?
Once a month suits most people. Exporting more often narrows down when someone left, but each export takes a few minutes for Instagram to prepare.
Why does someone show as unfollowed when they still follow me?
They most likely changed their username. The export lists usernames, not permanent account numbers, so a rename looks like one person leaving and another arriving.
Why did someone vanish from my followers without unfollowing?
A deactivated or deleted account is left out of the export, so it looks like an unfollow. If the account is reactivated, it reappears in your next export. Someone who blocks you disappears from both lists too.
